FORMER Glasgow Celtic midfielder Michael McGlinchey topped the Hyundai A-League for goal assists last season, however is working with the Mariners coaching staff to ensure he-s not only a regular goal provider, but also a consistent source of strikes.

McGlinchey has already registered one goal for Central Coast this term – a stunner in the yellow and navy-s round 5 mauling of Sydney FC at Bluetongue Stadium.

This weekend McGlinchey and his teammates face off against the competition-s front-runners, Adelaide United, and the New Zealand international today outlined that he has spoken with Australian goalscoring great and Central Coast Mariners Head Coach, Graham Arnold, about adding to his personal tally this on a more consistent basis.

“This season I am going to try and add more goals than assists,” McGlinchey said.

“It-s always nice getting assists but I have spoken to the manager and we-re definitely looking for a few more goals than assists, so that will be something I-ll be looking at working on this weekend.”

Recently McGlinchey fired home a double for the All Whites in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Tahiti in Christchurch.

Both strikes were of the highest calibre, with his second in particular earning the applause of pundits. From all of 20 yards, McGlinchey curled the ball past the Tahitian custodian into the top left corner of the goal.

McGlinchey hopes he can replicate a goal similar to that which he scored against Tahiti in the land of the long white cloud against John Kosmina-s team at Gosford’s idyllic bayside arena this weekend.

“It-s always good when they come out in force,” McGlinchey said of Central Coast-s fans.

“The Sydney game, I don-t know if it was because they turned up that we beat them 7-2 but it was definitely a factor.”

“With over 15,000, the boys lifted.”

Stifling conditions are forecast for Saturday, and McGlinchey believes the supporters can help secure the team victory against their respected opponents from Adelaide.

“When it-s like 40 degrees, you need the fans behind you to carry you through,” he said.

“They-re a dangerous team but I think we will just try and focus on ourselves like we have been since the start of the season, and
hopefully we-re good enough on the day.”

McGlinchey has spent November participating in the ever-popular Movember cause, and while the Kiwi often sports some stubble, he admits it took him a couple of weeks to grow his mo.

“It-s taken me a bit of time to get going,” he said. “It took me at least two weeks to get something showing.”

“I struck something up (online) about ten days ago that was half decent, and I think I-ve raised about 100 bucks which is good for the cause.”
