Mariners Academy: Strong start continues across all grades

The NPL2 Mariners celebrate a goal against Mounties

Damien Tsekenis scored four goals in first grade, the U/20’s won and the Mariners youth teams completed a clean sweep of Mounties in a big weekend of NPL2 results.

Tsekenis gave the Mariners the lead in first grade just 22 seconds in and never looked back from there, with James Bayliss, Jing Reece and an own goal rounding out the scoring.

The win built on the big first up win over Wanderers and Head Coach Nick Montgomery said he was pleased with the display his team put on.

“It was aVery strong performance under difficult circumstances with the A-League side playing on the same day and time,” he said.

“We were already a bit stretched having lost two of our best performers last week in Kuzevski and Vasilous meaning 16-year old Garang Kuol got his first senior start.”

“We worked hard in preseason to integrate the young players knowing we would lose players to the A-League squad which is great achievement in terms of player development.”

“We like to play attacking football and even after Matt Cahill going on loan and Alou stepping up to A-League, nothing changed in terms of how we approach games.”
