A COMBINATION of Central Coast Mariners National Youth team members, triallists and first teamers were today defeated 2-1 by Newcastle Jets in Tuggerah.

The behind closed doors training run was organised by both clubs to allow crucial game time to players who had not featured extensively so far this Hyundai A-League pre-season.

For the yellow and navy, the game provided the opportunity for Mariners boss Graham Arnold to give minutes to new recruit Mile Sterjovski, and Oliver Bozanic.

Newcastle featured a more experienced squad, with goalkeeper Ben Kennedy, defender Taylor Regan, midfielders Jacob Pepper and Bernardo Ribeiro, and attackers Michael Bridges and Marko Jesic featuring from referee Tim McGilchrist-s opening whistle.

It was Ribeiro who struck the opener for the Jets in the 13th minute before former Gold Coast United captain Mitch Cooper scored close to half time.

NYL member Aaron Peterson, who had come off the bench for the Mariners, pegged one back for the yellow and navy in the 74th minute.
