Hyundai A-League | Mariners Matchday 6 Preview

It’s home time for Alen Stajcic and the Mariners once again this weekend as they welcome Western United to Central Coast Stadium in round seven of the Hyundai A-League.

Both sides were beaten last weekend in round six and will be looking to rebound, but it’s the visitors in a more advantageous position as they remain in fourth spot and six points ahead of Sunday’s opponents.

They remain a largely unknown quantity still though for the Mariners with this to be the first ever meeting between the teams following Western’s entry into the league this season.

Panagiotis Kone returns for Mark Rudan’s side, while Staj will welcome back Danny DeSilva and Kye Rowles as they are back in the squad once again after missing the home loss to Adelaide.

It remains to be seen what the immediate impact to the starting group is with DeSilva’s return, after Milan Ðurić was ruled out of the preliminary 20-man squad with a hip complaint.

Speaking ahead of the game on Friday Stajcic said it will be a tough test against the competition newcomers and gave an update on players.

“They’ve probably got some of the most skilled players in the competition, they’ve got a fantastic squad and they’re arguably the most experienced team in the league,” he said.

“It’s going to be an interesting match and certainly a good test of how we’re travelling and how we’re progressing.”

“Jair has been with us a few weeks and isn’t quite 100% fit, but it’s great to have Kye back and Danny is back up to 100% after missing a game.”

“Milan [Ðurić] has a little bit of a hip complaint so he’ll probably miss this week but he’ll do another fitness test ahead of the game.”

The match will see the return of Mariners legend John Hutchinson to the Central Coast when he takes his seat on Western United’s bench as assistant coach.

$2 from every ticket sold for Sunday’s game will be donated to the Rural Fire Service (RFS), while RFS Volunteers and Fire & Rescue will get free entry to the game.
