Hear from the Head Coach

“All of the players have settled in really quickly,” Okon said. “That has a lot to do with the dressing-room. It’s a very welcoming one which has been the case at the Mariners for a number of years due to the great culture here.

“We do understand that when new players come in, especially foreign players, it does take a little bit of time to settle but we’re quite happy with where we are at the moment.

“Wout Brama & Tom Hiariej give us experience, they have qualities on the ball and they really fit with the way we want to play. Asdrubal is nicknamed The Bull in Spain. He works extremely hard, technically he’s very good and has a great eye for goal.

“We still have some pre-season games left, starting on Tuesday night which will help us understand where we’re at. Pre-season games are crucial for preparation, it’s a long pre-season but it’s flown by really quickly.

“Going into the match with Phoenix we will look at the various loadings of players. At the moment, we are only missing Blake Powell through injury but everyone else is fit and healthy which is important as we get so close to the season.

“When we reviewed last season, we weren’t happy with the amount of goals we conceded or the nature in which they were conceded. We will be defensively better, we have been working hard on that. Fitness wise we will be a lot stronger than we were last season,” Okon said.

Mariners Pre-Season Wrap

It’s been an exciting pre-season for Mariners fans, with Paul Okon having the ability to build his own squad, adding 11 new faces to the club ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 campaign.

Okon’s new recruits are fit, firing and ready for selection at Pluim Park which makes for a great opportunity to see the them in action before round one.
