Powell fires in Youth League Opener against Newcastle

The Central Coast Mariners marked the start of their Foxtel National Youth League campaign with a 1-1 draw away to the Newcastle Jets thanks to a second half strike by Blake Powell.

Returning from a long-term injury, Powell delivered a piece of individual brilliance in the 73rd minute to equalise for the Yellow & Navy at Newcastle’s No.2 Sportsground. The exciting attacker beat two defenders before shooting from the edge of the box to level the scores in round one.

The goal was enough to cancel out Devante Clut’s goal in the 35th minute who calmly converted a spot kick to give the Jets a first half lead.

Much to the excitement of Mariners fans Powell managed a full 90 minute performance, taking a huge step towards full recovery and a return to the Hyundai A-League
