NPL Previews: Mariners Academy host Wanderers Academy

It’s an exciting weekend of football ahead for our Central Coast Mariners Academy teams in the NPL 2, as the men host the Western Sydney Wanderers FC this Saturday, whilst the women hit the road on Sunday to face Marconi Stallions FC away.

Central Coast Mariners Academy vs. Western Sydney Wanderers FC

After a convincing 3-0 win against Parramatta last week, the Mariners’ Academy Men will look to capitalise on a home advantage and keep up their winning streak against Western Sydney Wanderers Academy at Pluim Park this Saturday. Kick-off is 4pm and entry is FREE!

The Mariners’ Academy, who have remained undefeated in their previous four games, currently sit on top of the Club Championship and 2nd on the first-grade competition ladder.

The Academy men had to settle for a 1-1 draw last time they took on Western Sydney away back in April, and the Wanderers will be keen to break their unlucky streak, after two months without a win.

Will Vazquez says his team are hungry for the challenge and are looking to build on last week’s performance.

“The match against Parramatta was a resilient performance against a dangerous opponent,” Vazquez said. “As a group we were quite pleased that, despite not playing as fluidly as the group has in the past, they were still able to create chances and minimize the opponent to only a few chances throughout the match.

“This weekend against Western Sydney Wanderers will be a fantastic challenge that the boys are really zoning in on. Earlier this year we were second best across all three grades, so this will really show how much progress has been made individually and as a group,” Vazquez said.

Marconi Stallions FC Women vs. Central Coast Academy Women

Our Academy women are back on the road to face Marconi Stallions at Marconi Stadium on Sunday, after an impressive 5-0 win against Inter Lions SC at home last week.

It was another 5-0 score when the Academy Women last took on the Stallions back in May, thanks to a goal from Georgia Davis and a brace apiece to Jordan Evans and Candice Phelan.

The Mariners Academy are 2nd on both the competition ladder and in the Club Championship, but a win against the 7th placed Marconi Stallions will keep first place firmly in their sights.

“Great performance by the girls on the weekend,” Barrett said. “We were definitely up against it heading in, missing some experienced players but the squad dominated from the outset pinning inter in their own half for majority of the match.

“This week we play a Marconi side on the road clinging to a top five spot and running hot off the back of a change in form.

“The last result will count for nothing and our approach to this game must be a sensible one.

“We want to keep winning as always our consistent performances have got us this far and we will need the same this weekend

“We are still a few weeks away from a full roster but our depth has been tested and is definitely up to the test,” Barrett said.
