Former English Premier League coach Harry Redknapp is set to join the Central Coast Mariners as a football consultant for the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 season.

Mariners’ owner and chairman Mike Charlesworth made the announcement at the club’s 2016 #MarinersMedal night at Terrigal’s Crowne Plaza on Friday evening.

The former Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United boss will work as a consultant to the Central Coast Mariners football department and connect the club with his ties abroad.

Redknapp most recently coached Jordan in a two-game stint back in March; with the 69-year-old enjoying an 8-0 win over Bangladesh before his side were humbled 5-1 by the Socceroos in Sydney.

Charlesworth touted the signing as one of the biggest in Central Coast Mariners history when he addressed the 300 strong crowd on Friday.

“Redknapp is a very well respected EPL coach and has been for many years with the likes of West Ham, Portsmouth and Spurs,” Charlesworth said.” “He’s a BBC football pundit and one of the greatest football characters in the game today.

“In the interest of assisting our coaches and staff, assisting the Mariners commercially and help to put them on the global map we’ve just made one of our biggest signings and that’s Harry himself joining the Mariners on a part time basis.

“Just like Peter Storrie, Harry will be visiting the Coast on at least two occasions during the season and hopefully more during the off season and I think this great news and another huge step forward in the club’s development,” Charlesworth said.
