The Central Coast Mariners are gearing up to take on Wellington Phoenix this Thursday when New Year’s Eve football returns to Central Coast Stadium. Hear from 20-year-old Harry Ascroft who bagged his maiden Hyundai A-League goal at the weekend.

In our most recent battle against Sydney FC, Ascroft ventured forward from the back four and powered home a header thanks to a superb Matt Sim cross.

Here’s what Harry had to say after Tuesday’s training session:

“[The goal] It was great service from Simmy [Matt Sim] and I just put my head on it, so luckily it went in,” Ascroft said.

“I was really pumped after that, hopefully we could have pulled something back but it wasn’t meant to be, I really wanted to get something out of that game.

“It’s a lot of hard work now and refocussing for the New Year’s game, we need to focus on the things that didn’t go to plan against Sydney FC.

“Our structure and shape was a bit all over the park but it was unfortunate that we went down to 10 men, which made it a lot harder on the players.

“There’s definitely some positives to take out of that game but there’s also a lot we can improve on.

“We just need to find motivation amongst ourselves, we need to keep driving each other as much as we can, it’s a tough time but the only way from here is up.

“Yeah, Tom [Heward-Belle] did exceptionally well, he made some quality saves and the young boy stepping in at Sydney FC’s home ground in front of 12 000 people is not an easy task but he did a great job.”
