Mariners women humbled by rampant Roar

The Central Coast Mariners Westfield W-League team suffered its first home loss of the new season against front-runners the Queensland Roar at Campbelltown Stadium last night, with the rampant visitors claiming a 5-0 triumph.

Claire Polkinghorne, Lana Harch, Lauren Colthorpe, Elise Kellond-Knight and Stephanie Latham each found the back of the net for the Roar, whose third win of the campaign sees the Queenslanders top the Westfield W-League after four rounds.

Despite the nature of the score-line, the Mariners were largely competitive and particularly impressive throughout a solid opening stanza that saw the Roar take an early lead against the run of play.

The home side started the second half with similar intent – Renee Rollason-s corner shortly after the break creating a goalmouth scramble in front of Roar goalkeeper Casey Dumont that ultimately missed a goal scoring intervention from a Mariners player.

The Roar found their second goal and effectively opened the floodgates shortly after the hour mark when Polkinghorne delivered an inch-perfect cross for Harch, who cleverly headed home.

“We played a good first half and part of the second half, though I am very disappointed that we threw in the towel the way we did,” said Mariners Westfield W-League Head Coach Stephen Roche after the match.

“Coming off the win over Canberra, I was happy with the initial intensity, though it was far from acceptable in the final thirty minutes, we-ll have a big week this week to ensure we have no such slip ups again.”

The Mariners- Westfield W-League campaign continues on Saturday, 22 November with a derby clash against southern rivals Sydney FC at Campbelltown Stadium. Kick off is at 6pm.
