Mariners Academy: Seniors look to continue winning run at Pluim

Louis Khoury in action against SD Raiders

After a winning weekend last time out, the Mariners NPL2 Men’s and Women’s teams are both back at Pluim Park on Sunday afternoon as the enter the home stretch of their respective seasons.

A crucial clash looms for the Men’s team, as they take on fifth placed NWS spirit with both teams chasing one of the four promotion spots: Spirit sit fifth on 27 points with the Mariners just one point back in sixth spot.

Last week’s victory against SD Raiders was a third straight win for the team, and with the next two rounds at home there is ample opportunity for Nick Montgomery’s side to close the gap to the four.

His side will be bolstered in the coming weeks by the return of a number of players from the A-League squad, with the likes of Dan Hall and Matt Hatch likely to be available for selection.

The Women’s program will welcome Northbridge Bulls to Pluim, taking them on for the first time since they met back in round one, with the Bulls finishing 4-2 winners.

The Bulls sit in third spot, six points ahead of the Mariners but with only one extra win, and a victory here for the Mariners would leave them firmly in the conversation for the top five, creating separation from the chasing pack.

Emily Diaz continued her excellent season with another goal last week, taking her to 10 for the season, and while the team has struggled at times with a raft of injuries they are well placed for the second half of the campaign.

Dan Barrett said after Sunday’s win that the team has targeted certain matches as must wins to make finals, and with four of the next six matches at home, there is ample opportunity for them to pick up some extra points along the way.
