Mt Druitt Town Rangers 1 (O’Leary) Central Coast Mariners Academy 4 (Abdullah, Kekeris, Peters & William)

Thanks to a successful weekend away at Popondetta Park, the Mariners have claimed top stop in the Club Championship standings when the first-grade team became the first to defeat Mt Druitt on Sunday afternoon.

It was Mt Druitt who took the lead in the 10th minute after the Mariners Academy gave away a cheap penalty allowing O’Leary to step up and convert from the spot. However, the early lead wouldn’t deter the Mariners who returned serve eight minutes later.

In the 18th minute a beautiful ball to the back post found the head of Aamir Abdullah who slotted it past the keeper. Just before the half time break, Peters went through one on one with the Druitt keeper and blasted it into the bottom corner to give the Mariners a half time lead.

The Mariners started the second half the same way they finished the first when all of the chances they had resulted in a third goal in the 65th minute when a perfect through ball from Peters found the feet of Kekeris who took the ball in his stride and capitalised on a one-on-one opportunity.

Five minutes later the Mariners were awarded a penalty thanks to some nice work by Peters. Up stepped Charles William who converted from the spot to make the score 4-1, capping off a very convincing win against the ladder leaders.
