A dozen dedicated tacticians from Dubbo and surrounds braved chilly conditions to take in a Tony Walmsley led coach education session in the Orana Region last night.
With the session modelled on Mariners first team thinking and concepts, Walmsley guided a group of local under 18 players through their paces, while also offering feedback to and answering the questions of the coaches.
The session received plenty of praise from the coaches in attendance, including from Central Coast supporter Cameron Stone who travelled from Parkes to be involved.
“It-s real good for the area and it-s good to have him (Tony) come out for nights like this and really teach these coaches something that we can all take back to our Clubs,” Stone said.
Walmsley said the session was perfect for people like Cameron who is involved in both grassroots football and the areas youth representative teams.
“It-s ideal for him,” Walmsley said. “The more we can feed the likes of Cameron with information the better.
“We know he comes to watch a lot of home games as well so he-s really seeing the Club from the top down.”
Walmsley said the a key emphasis of his session on Thursday was trying to teach coaches how to arrange training to get the most out of the time they have with their players.
“The aim was to show them how to structure a session from start to finish,” he said.
“Start with a theme, stick with that theme all the through and develop the idea.”
“If you give players strategies that are going to help them to be successful on the field to whatever level they can get to then they are going to enjoy their football a lot more.”
“They had a lot of positive of comments to make but also a few questions and I hope I could point them in the right direction.”
The coach education course in Dubbo concludes Walmsley-s three-day visit to Western NSW. On Wednesday, Walmsley guided the Western NSW Mariners under 15s squad through an attacking based session in Orange.
