The Mariners Academy were out to make amends after last week’s defeat at the hands of Fraser Park, when they took on Mounties on Sunday afternoon at Valentine Sports Park.

The Academy made a bright start when Buhagiar won the ball and played it to the feet of Lachlan Wales who then played the ball across the top of the box to Bingham who neatly finished his first time strike past Mounties keeper Daniel Sadaka in the 5th minute.

The Mariners Academy wasted no time doubling their lead in the 19th minute when a Mounties defensive lapse fell to Bingham that allowed him to chip to Buhagiar for a nice goal.

The Academy nearly made it 3-0 in the 37th minute when Wales had a solid shot that was well saved by the Mounties keeper.

Mounties pulled a goal back early in the second half when a shot was deflected off Liam O’Dell leaving Heward-Belle with no chance to make a save in the 48th minute.

Mounties nearly levelled proceedings five minutes later when an ambitious attempt from 35-yards was lobbed over Heward-Belle who fantastically finger tipped it back over the crossbar.

In the 56th minute Mounties had their equaliser when a free kick from a wide area was floated into the box, which found the head of Patrick Gatt who headed home.

The Mariners Academy hit back 3 minutes later when Bingham found Ryan Peterson with another pin point through ball, and Peterson made no mistake to calmly slot past the Mounties keeper to make it 3-2 in favour of the Academy.

The home team finished proceedings a man down when Matthew West was awarded his second yellow card of the night in the 86th minute. That didn’t slow down the Mounties attack who were in search of an equaliser late on, and nearly found it with the last kick of the game when a curled shot from the edge of the box was watched past the post by Heward-Belle
