Much-travelled, vastly-experienced, Australian football icon and, as one metropolitan newspaper famously coined upon his arrival at Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium in August 2006 – the Mariners’ big fish. Socceroo legend Vidmar became the Mariners’ inaugural marquee signing on the eve of the 2006/07 Hyundai A-League season, an acquisition that effectively welcomed home one most respected Australian internationals of all time after a long and distinguished overseas career that included stays in the top leagues of Belgium, the Netherlands, Scotland and England. Vidmar’s Socceroos honours are equally impressive. Having debuted for Australia in 1991, Vidmar accumulated 76 Socceroo caps by the time he bid adieu to the international arena in October 2006, making him the third-highest capped Socceroo in history. Vidmar became the 43rd Socceroo captain after wearing the armband for Australia’s memorable 1-0 triumph over Brazil at the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup in Korea.
