8. Dean Heffernan
An amazing eight goals from left back saw Heffernan explode onto the Hyundai A-League scene in 2005/06 and ultimately secure a move to one of Europe’s giant leagues – Germany’s Bundesliga. While in Germany with 1. FC Nürnberg, Heffernan was unable to repeat his incredible feats of the season previous, largely due to injuries and the form of team-mate and incumbent wingback flyer Javier Pinola. Consequently, Heffernan returned to the Mariners for season three, much to the delight of the Bluetongue Stadium faithful and soon found himself under consideration for Qantas Socceroo selection. When Heffernan looked to be back to his first season best, a broken tibia suffered in late December cruelly ended his contribution to the Hyundai A-League 2007/08. Singled out for praise by Qantas Socceroo coach Pim Verbeek prior to his injury, Heffernan’s recovery is now complete, and his performances in season five are eagerly anticipated by Mariners and Qantas Socceroo fans alike.
